Dartmouth College Dance Card - 1908 Junior Prom. Measures 2 3/4 by 3 3/4 inches, with original gray string attached. in very good condition. The front cover has the owner's name written neatly in ink, "Margaret Sheldon". Dance cards originated in the 18th century and were used by women to record the names of the gentlemen she intended to dance with at a formal ball. They were used widely in the 19th century. This one is for the Junior Promenade on May 21, 1908. It lists the dances to be played starting with: 1. Waltz, 2. Two Step, 3. Waltz, 4. Two Step and 5. Waltz; 20 dances in total listed. Next to each dance is a place to write in your dance partner, listed under "Engagements". The dance card is marked neatly in pen pencil, and apparently Margaret did alright with a name written in on all but 8 of the 36 dances. Next to some of the names of her partners she has written the Fraternity they belong to. 12 pages in total. A rare dance card from a bygone era.
