Four American Universities - Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Columbia. Hardcover book in grey cloth published 1895 by Harper and Bros. 202 pages. Except for one nick at the top of the spine, the book is in very good condition. The book contains 66 individual illustrations in addition to the historical text for each college. The part of the book that makes it unique are the four additional high quality illustrations of each of the four campuses. Each of these panoramic illustrations which foldout to measure 10 1/2 by 22 inches. (Princeton, Yale and Harvard are present in this copy, the Columbia fold-out illustration is missing). Called 'Birds Eye Views' in the book they are very detailed and are suitable for framing if detached. Thus, helps to explain the rarity of the book, which if often disbound so the illustrations can be framed. The illustrations are charming and how horse drawn carriages and early electric trams. Contents include: Harvard, by Charles Eliot Norton; Yale, by Arthur T. Hadley; Princeton, by William M. Sloane; and Columbia, by Brander Matthews. Each of the respective authors was a professor or President of their respective university. A rare look at four elite colleges in the late 19th century.
