1962 University of Pennsylvania Hospital Bill signed by J.E. Rhoads. An original sixty year old hospital bill signed by J.E. Rhoads, MD accompanied by the envelope it was mailed with and a detailed bill. The bill shows daily board and care of 8 days at $22 per day, telephone charges of $1.10, transfusions of $14.00, anastesis of $45 and more. Upon his death in 2022 the National Library of Medicine's obituary wrote this about Doctor Rhoads, "Jonathan E. Rhoads, one of the 20th century’s great surgeons, died at age 94. His active professional career spanned the last three-quarters of the century and was responsible for the development of total parenteral nutrition, one of the most important medical advances of that period."

A building at HUP is now named after Dr. Rhoads.
