Antique circa 1900 Princeton University china plate. The plate measures 8 inches in diameter and has the Princeton University crest hand painted on. The edge of the plate is colored in the school's colors of orange and black. There is some fading and dark soiling as seen in the picture, especially around the top edge at the 10-12 o'clock positions. There is also some crazing on the plate.
The set was made by Crescent Utopia Pottery Company of Trenton, New Jersey and the makers mark is on the bottom of the piece. Trenton was an early center of pottery and plate manufacturers in the late 19th century. At the turn of the 20th century it was the largest manufacturing hub in the country with over fifty different pottery companies working there. The Crescent Pottery Co. was organized in 1881 by Charles H. Cook and W. S. Hancock, for the manufacture of sanitary earthenware, white granite and C. C. wares. The “Utopia” mark was placed on the under-glaze of decorated dinner ware from 1900 to 1902.
A very rare piece that would look great on display.
