- Debating Contest Program 1894 - Cornell vs. University of Pennsylvania
Original program from the first "Annual Debating Contest" between students of the University of Pennsylvania and Cornell University. The debate was held in Ithaca on April 20, 1894. The four page fold-out program is in good condition and lays out the order of exercises and the debaters. The subject of the debate is whether it is in the best interest of the United States to annex the Hawaiian Islands. One of the three judges was Elihu Root who would go on to serve as a U.S. Senator for New York and then as Secretary of State under Teddy Roosevelt.
