The wearing of the "Y" on your chest was governed by quite a strict hierarchy, "The University "Y" insignia shall be given only to those members of the foot-ball, base-ball and crew who have taken part in championship contents, and to the manager of the association. The University "Y" and accompanying insignia shall be given only to those members of the track team who win a point in the inter-collegiate games or who win first or second place in the Yale-Harvard games." As was the awarding of numbers on your uniform, "Crew - Numerals shall be awarded to those Freshman who have been taken to New London and to the manager. Numeral caps may be awarded to the vice-president or secretary at the discretion of the manager of the University crew."
